Gordon Vorster was born in Warrenton in the Northern Cape. He studied privately in Florence and Rome and then at Wits University under Martienssen and Portway. He had over one hundred solo exhibitions and is well represented in South Africa. He was fascinated by the ambiguities of animal camouflage and the different ways of interpreting them. By the early 60’s he seemed to be the foremost interpreter of the South African landscape but seemed to reach an impasse and fell back on more realistic rendering of animals and landscape. In the late 60’s he reverted back to dramatizing optical ambiguity in his work by applying conventions derived from Op-Art.
