Pieter van der Westhuizen was born in Pretoria. He studied at UNISA and under Leo Theron, Zakkie Eloff and Robert Hodgins. He has participated in numerous exhibitions in SA, Belgium, the USA and UK, also solo exhibitions in SA, Belgium and Japan. His early portrait work exhibits sensitivity and oneness with the subject.
