McCaw was born in Pilgrim’s Rest in the Eastern Transvaal. He was a painter mostly in oils of Cape and Lesotho landscape studies. He studied at the Johannesburg Tech Art School under Sydney Carter and Emily Fern, also Central School and Heatherley’s School, London. He was an official war artist in North Africa and Italy, his work from this period of pictorial accounts of people, places and battlefronts won him much acclaim. He later developed a popular descriptive style that has become known as Cape Impressionism.
