De
Jongh, Tinus (1885-1942)

Tinus
de Jongh was born in Amsterdam and came to Cape Town in 1921 where he began painting local views. Initially his palette was subdued, and characteristically Dutch in manner. But the brilliant South African light and rugged scenery lured him into a much more blatant palette. Far from offending, this palette was extremely popular and laid the basis for a formula for South African landscape painters which pertains even today. His son Garbielle de Jongh carries on with endless sunset tinted mountain landscapes.
